What Is Point-to-Point Wireless Internet for Rural Properties?

Point-to-point wireless internet connects two buildings using a pair of outdoor directional radios. It is very different from a normal Wi-Fi extender.

One radio connects to the internet at the main building and sends the connection wirelessly to a second radio at the remote building. From there, a Wi-Fi access point can provide internet coverage inside the barn, workshop, office, guest house or other building.

This is especially useful on rural properties where Starlink, cable or fiber internet is available at the house, but another building may be hundreds of feet away.

Instead of trenching across the property to install cable, a properly designed wireless bridge can carry the internet connection between the buildings through the air.

Line of Sight Is Important

One of the most important parts of a point-to-point wireless system is having a clear path between the two radios.

Trees, buildings, hills and other obstacles can weaken or completely block the wireless link.

However, simply being able to see the other building does not always mean the path is completely clear.

Wireless signals also use an area around the direct path called the Fresnel zone . Think of it as an invisible football-shaped area surrounding the signal between the two radios. Trees, rooftops or even the ground entering this area can reduce performance.

That is why we evaluate the property before deciding where the radios should be mounted.

Sometimes raising a radio only a few feet can make a substantial difference.

What Equipment Is Used?

A typical point-to-point system may include:

Two directional outdoor wireless radios
Mounting brackets or poles
Outdoor-rated Ethernet cable
PoE power supplies or injectors
Surge protection and grounding
A network switch when required
A Wi-Fi access point at the remote building

We commonly use professional equipment such as Ubiquiti NanoBeam and similar Ubiquiti wireless products , depending on the requirements of the property.

There is no single radio or antenna that is right for every installation.

From the Main Building to the Barn or Workshop

At the building with the internet connection, the first radio is connected to the network and mounted where it has a clear path toward the remote building.

A second radio is installed at the other end and carefully aligned with the first.

Ethernet cable connects the radio to the network equipment inside each building. Power over Ethernet, commonly called PoE , allows power and data to travel through the Ethernet cable so electrical power does not have to be installed at the outdoor radio itself.

Once the wireless bridge is operating, a separate Wi-Fi access point can provide coverage inside the remote building.

Starlink at House → Point-to-Point Radio → Wireless Link → Radio at Barn → Wi-Fi Access Point

The same concept can be used with cable, fiber or other internet services.

Metal Buildings Need Special Consideration

Many barns, workshops and agricultural buildings in Central Florida are constructed with metal siding or metal roofs.

Metal can significantly reduce Wi-Fi signals.

For that reason, receiving a strong point-to-point signal at the outside of the building does not necessarily mean you will have good Wi-Fi coverage inside.

We normally design the remote side of the system with its own properly located Wi-Fi access point.

Depending on the property, an additional outdoor access point can also provide Wi-Fi around a horse arena, equipment yard, patio or other outdoor area.

What Affects Performance?

Several things can affect the reliability of a wireless bridge:

Trees: Heavy foliage can block the signal, and trees continue growing after the installation.

Terrain: A hill or change in elevation can obstruct the path.

Distance: Longer links require more careful system design and alignment.

Mounting height: Sometimes height is more important than distance.

Internet speed: A wireless bridge cannot create bandwidth that is not available from the original internet connection.

Building construction: Metal, concrete and other materials can affect Wi-Fi coverage inside the remote building.

DIY or Professional Installation?

A simple wireless bridge across a short, completely open area can sometimes be installed by an experienced do-it-yourselfer.

More difficult installations require careful planning.

Professional installation becomes particularly valuable when the system involves trees, long distances, elevated mounting locations, towers, lightning exposure or multiple buildings.

A professional installation should include proper radio alignment, weatherproof cable connections, secure mounting, appropriate grounding and surge protection, and testing after the system is completed.

Never climb a tower or work from a dangerous roof location without the proper equipment and training.

Can Point-to-Point Wireless Work With Starlink?

Yes.

This is one of the applications we see regularly in rural Central Florida.

You may have an excellent Starlink connection at the main house but need internet at a barn, detached garage, workshop, office or other building.

Instead of purchasing another internet service, we may be able to distribute the existing Starlink connection across the property using a point-to-point wireless bridge.

Height Can Be Just as Important as the Antenna

People often concentrate on the brand name or advertised range of an antenna. In rural reception, antenna height can be every bit as important as the antenna itself.

Trees, hills, buildings, and other obstructions can weaken, reflect, or distort television signals before they reach your antenna.

Sometimes moving an antenna another 10 feet higher can make a dramatic improvement because it helps clear nearby obstructions or places the antenna in a better signal path.

Additional height may result in:

More available channels
Less pixelation
Fewer picture freezes and dropouts
More dependable reception
Better reception from distant broadcast markets

However, higher is not automatically better in every situation. Television signals can behave differently from one property to another, which is why we look at the entire reception environment rather than relying on one simple rule.

How Far Can a TV Antenna Really Reach?

Many antenna manufacturers and internet marketing companies advertise antennas as “50-mile,” “100-mile,” “150-mile,” or even longer-range antennas.

There is some value in these numbers as a very rough comparison within a manufacturer’s product line, but they should never be confused with a guaranteed reception distance .

Antennas are actually engineered and compared using specifications such as gain, frequency response, directivity, front-to-back ratio, and radiation pattern .

We are not aware of any standardized scientific formula that converts those antenna specifications into a universal mileage rating that will apply to every home.

Unfortunately, some of the extreme mileage claims found in consumer advertising are more of a sales pitch than a meaningful engineering specification.

A 150-mile sticker does not make an antenna a 150-mile antenna.

As a practical rule of thumb, we generally begin looking at conventional television reception within approximately 75 miles of the transmitting towers . That is not a hard limit. Reception can be better or worse depending on transmitter power, frequency, terrain, antenna height, atmospheric conditions, and obstacles between the viewer and the tower.

Broadcast stations can also use directional transmitting antenna patterns , concentrating more of their permitted signal toward the communities and marketplace they are designed to serve.

That means two homes located the same distance from a transmitter may have very different reception.

This is why we look at the actual transmitters, frequencies, terrain, tower direction, antenna gain, and available installation height instead of simply trusting a mileage number printed on a box.

The SB48 is an 8-bay UHF antenna.

When the stations we want to receive are concentrated in one general direction, all eight bays can be aimed toward that market, allowing us to take advantage of the full UHF gain of the antenna.

We particularly like the SB48 when we need strong UHF performance from one market without moving up to a much larger traditional broadband antenna.

Winegard HD8200 — Our Largest Broadband Antenna

When we get into difficult rural reception and tower installations, the equipment becomes considerably larger.

The Winegard HD8200 is our largest broadband television antenna.

At roughly 14 feet long , it is normally used on an antenna tower rather than a typical residential roof mount because of its size and the type of installation for which we use it.

The HD8200 provides reception across:

Low VHF, FM, High VHF, and UHF.

One of the reasons we like the HD8200 is its broader reception pattern.

The way I often explain it to customers is:

“The HD8200 has wider peripheral vision.”

If several broadcast towers are spread out but are still located in the same general direction, the HD8200 can be a very useful antenna.

Instead of requiring extremely precise aiming at one transmitter location, its broader reception characteristics can make it a better choice when the stations are spread across part of the horizon.

Winegard HD7698 — When We Want to Aim More Precisely

The Winegard HD7698 is another large antenna that we normally use on towers.

Like the HD8200, it is approximately 14 feet long , but it performs a somewhat different job.

The HD7698 is a High-VHF/UHF antenna and is more sensitive to direction than the HD8200.

I explain the difference this way:

“The HD8200 has wider peripheral vision. The HD7698 looks more directly at the target.”

The HD7698 also provides higher UHF gain, which can make it an excellent choice when the broadcast transmitters are concentrated in one reasonably narrow direction.

A good example is aiming toward a transmitter group or antenna farm such as Jacksonville, where many of the stations may be located in approximately the same direction from the receiving property.

In that type of situation, the HD7698 lets us concentrate more precisely on the target area.

Building a Serious Tower-Mounted Antenna System

Sometimes one antenna is not enough to accomplish what the customer wants.

For a difficult rural location, we may combine antennas on the same tower.

For example, a large Winegard broadband antenna can be installed on the tower with a high-gain Sky Blue SB48 mounted several feet above it .

The result is a substantial antenna system that, when signal conditions call for it and matched with the appropriate high-gain preamplifier , lets us take advantage of different antenna characteristics for different portions of the television spectrum.

These are not installations we recommend simply because “bigger is better.”

They are systems we use when the reception problem actually justifies the equipment and tower height.

ClearStream 2 and ClearStream 4 — Performance Without the Traditional Antenna Look

Antennas Direct makes some extremely well-built antennas.

The ClearStream 2 and ClearStream 4 are particularly popular with homeowners because they do not look like traditional television antennas.

Their black circular figure-8 elements mounted in front of a reflector give them a much more contemporary appearance.

They are also very good UHF antennas.

Where we are more cautious is VHF reception. These smaller ClearStream designs do not, even with their optional VHF add-on kits , provide the same VHF gain as some of the larger traditional antennas we install.

For that reason, we particularly like them in areas approximately 15 to 25 miles from the transmitters , especially when the important stations are primarily on UHF.

They can be an excellent solution for customers who want good performance while keeping the antenna relatively small and attractive.

Receiving Stations From Two Different Directions

Central Florida creates some interesting reception situations.

Depending on the property, a customer may want television stations coming from the Orlando market as well as stations coming from Tampa.

An Antennas Direct 8-bay UHF system can give us another option.

The two 4-bay sections can be positioned independently. For example, one 4-bay section can be aimed toward Orlando while the other is aimed toward Tampa.

There is a tradeoff.

When an 8-bay antenna is divided between two directions, each market is effectively being served by one 4-bay section rather than having all eight bays concentrated toward a single market.

In simple terms:

Sky Blue SB48: full 8-bay UHF gain concentrated toward one market.

Split-direction 8-bay system: greater flexibility for two markets, with the antenna system divided between those directions.

If strong VHF reception is also required, we can add a dedicated VHF antenna to the same mast.

Systems like these can also be used as part of larger commercial-grade master antenna installations for nursing homes, campgrounds, assisted-living facilities, hospitality properties, and other locations serving multiple televisions.

In the last 12 months, Samsung TV Plus has seen a nearly twofold growth in consumer viewing, including nearly 3 billion hours streamed, ² by highly engaged users worldwide.

Amidst this global growth, Samsung is opening up a new era for its free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) and video-on-demand service, with Samsung TV Plus now reaching 24 countries and 465 million devices globally across the company’s TV, smart monitors, mobile and Family Hub refrigerator lineups.

Enhancing Visibility for Viewing Versatility

Samsung TV Plus’ new logo reflects the platform’s cross-device capabilities, with a blue and orange logo design on a black background providing improved visibility that signals the versatility of the platform.

In line with the coloration of its logo’s redesign, Samsung TV Plus’ UI will also be available in a Dark Theme with enhanced visibility. Users can more easily browse what’s on now, recommended programs and channel lists.

Bringing Users More of the Content They Love

Along with these redesigns, Samsung TV Plus will unveil a host of new programming partnerships. In the U.S., Top Gear, Law & Order Special Victims Unit, NCIS and other popular content will is set to be available, and viewers can also enjoy the exclusive premiere of the trailer for Demi Lovato’s new music video.

In the U.K., Samsung TV Plus is exclusively offering viewers the 2022 season of America’s Got Talent, as well as all previous seasons from 2019 to the present. This will eventually include the season finale, which is set to be aired in September. Furthermore, the first native 8K produced TV series, Das Boot, has launched exclusively in 8K on Samsung TV Plus in Germany. It was produced by Bavaria Fiction for Sky in partnership with Samsung Electronics Germany and has been available to watch on Samsung Neo QLED 8Ks via Samsung TV Plus from 2020 onwards.

The new season of America’s Got Talent is coming to the U.K. exclusively on Samsung TV Plus, while viewers in Germany can look forward to Das Boot, the first native 8K TV show.

For Samsung TV Plus users in Australia and New Zealand, the first exclusive, owned and operated (O&O) channels have been launched. These offer fan-favorite shows from the eighties, nineties and noughties — collected under the umbrella channel Throwback TV — as well as competitions and reality shows from around the globe under its Entertainment Hub channel. In India, Samsung TV Plus viewers can enjoy even more content from some of the top national and regional channel partners as Samsung continues to strengthen its relationship with channel partners including Discovery, Republic TV, Aaj Tak, Mastiii, Q TV, Pitaara and Balle.
