You may be able to watch many NFL games FREE with an over-the-air TV antenna.

Many NFL games are broadcast on local CBS, FOX, NBC and ABC television stations. These are free over-the-air broadcast networks. If those stations are available at your home, the right TV antenna system may allow you to watch them without paying a monthly fee for local television.

Ocala is primarily served by Gainesville-area television stations.

But depending on your exact location and reception conditions, some homes may also be able to receive television stations from the Orlando or Tampa Bay directions.

That can mean more local channels — and on some Sundays, more NFL football choices.

Depending on your location, receiving stations from more than one market may require a TV antenna rotor or a second antenna.

How Can I Watch NFL Football FREE With an Antenna?

NFL games shown on your local broadcast television stations are available free over the air.

Your antenna receives the television signal directly from the local broadcast tower. You don't need a cable company or streaming subscription to receive an over-the-air station.

So when an NFL game is being broadcast on a local station you can receive, you can watch that game without a monthly antenna bill.

An antenna won't provide every NFL game. Some games are exclusive to streaming services or pay-TV channels.

That's why we often recommend:

Use an antenna for the local channels you can receive FREE. Keep streaming for the games and programming you can't receive over the air.

You don't have to choose between an antenna and streaming.

What NFL Games Can I Watch With an Antenna?

That depends on which games your local television stations are broadcasting.

NFL games are regularly carried on broadcast networks including:

CBS — Many Sunday afternoon NFL games

FOX — Many Sunday afternoon NFL games

NBC — Sunday Night Football and other selected games

ABC — Selected NFL games when scheduled for broadcast television

When those games are carried by a local over-the-air station available at your home, an antenna may allow you to watch them FREE.

Other games may require streaming or a pay-TV service.

Why Can't I Choose Any NFL Game I Want?

This is one of the most important things to understand about watching football with an antenna.

Your antenna doesn't choose the football game.

Your antenna receives your local television station.

The NFL's television agreements and local broadcast assignments determine which game appears on that station in your television market.

For example, suppose two NFL games are being played Sunday afternoon on CBS.

If your Gainesville CBS station is carrying one NFL game, that's the game you'll receive from that station.

Installing a larger antenna will not make that same station show another NFL game instead.

The antenna receives the station. The broadcaster determines which football game is on it.

Jacksonville Jaguars Fans in Ocala

Because Ocala is served primarily by Gainesville-area television stations, Jaguars fans may often have opportunities to watch Jacksonville games when those games are selected for the Gainesville market.

When a Jaguars game is assigned to a local CBS or FOX station you can receive, you may be able to watch the game FREE over the air.

But regional NFL assignments can change from week to week.

One Sunday you may receive Jacksonville. Another Sunday, the same station may carry a completely different NFL matchup.

That doesn't mean anything has changed with your antenna.

The station is simply carrying a different NFL game that week.

What About Miami Dolphins Fans?

Let's not forget Florida's original NFL team — the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins began playing in 1966, years before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and decades before the Jacksonville Jaguars.

That means many longtime Florida residents grew up watching Miami and still consider the Dolphins their team.

Selected Miami Dolphins games are carried on traditional broadcast networks such as CBS and FOX.

When a Dolphins game is selected for broadcast by a local station you can receive, you may be able to watch Miami football FREE over the air.

But regional NFL assignments can vary from week to week.

One Sunday your local station may carry Miami. Another Sunday, Jacksonville or another NFL matchup may be shown instead.

There is nothing wrong with your antenna.

The local station is simply broadcasting the game assigned to that market.

For longtime Dolphins fans in Ocala and Marion County, free over-the-air television can still provide opportunities to watch Miami throughout the season.

What About Tampa Bay Buccaneers Fans?

This is where Ocala becomes especially interesting.

Depending on your exact location, antenna height, terrain and surrounding obstructions, some homes may also be able to receive television stations from the Tampa Bay television market.

Tampa Bay stations will frequently carry the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when the Bucs have the applicable local network and time slot.

That means a Gainesville-area station and a Tampa Bay station can sometimes carry different NFL games at the same time.

If your antenna system can receive stations from both directions, you may have another football choice.

What About Orlando Stations?

Some Ocala-area homes may also be able to receive television stations from the Orlando direction.

Orlando-area stations can sometimes carry different NFL games than Gainesville or Tampa Bay.

That means a properly designed antenna system may potentially give some Ocala homes access to stations from three television markets:

Gainesville

Orlando

Tampa Bay

That does not mean every home can receive all three markets, and it does not guarantee three different football games.

But it can create more viewing possibilities.

Jaguars, Dolphins AND Buccaneers?

Potentially — but let's be clear about what that means.

Receiving stations from Gainesville, Orlando and Tampa Bay does not guarantee that you'll be able to watch all three Florida NFL teams every Sunday.

The NFL schedule, network assignments and local broadcast decisions determine which games each station carries.

But consider the possibilities.

A Gainesville-area station may be carrying the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Another local broadcast may feature the Miami Dolphins.

A Tampa Bay station may be carrying the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

An Orlando station may carry one of those teams or a completely different NFL matchup.

That's why access to more than one television market can be valuable:

More receivable local stations can mean more NFL football choices.

Why Would I Need a TV Antenna Rotor?

There's one challenge.

The Gainesville, Orlando and Tampa Bay television transmitters are located in different directions from Ocala.

A long-range directional antenna performs best when it's aimed toward the television transmitters you want to receive.

One solution may be a TV antenna rotor.

A rotor allows you to turn the antenna.

Want the Gainesville stations?

Turn the antenna toward Gainesville.

Want to see what's available from Orlando or Tampa Bay?

Turn the antenna toward that market.

For the right home and reception conditions, a rotor can be an excellent way to take advantage of television signals arriving from substantially different directions.

Would a Second TV Antenna Be Better?

Sometimes.

Instead of rotating one antenna, a properly designed system may use a second antenna aimed toward another television market.

For example, the main antenna may be optimized for Gainesville while another antenna is aimed toward Orlando or Tampa Bay.

But installing two antennas isn't necessarily as simple as connecting two pieces of coax together.

The available signals, frequencies, antenna locations and directions need to be evaluated to determine whether a multiple-antenna system makes sense.

That's one reason professional antenna system design can make a difference.

What If I Follow Another NFL Team?

No problem.

Ocala is home to football fans from all over the country.

Maybe you're a Steelers fan, Bills fan, Eagles fan, Giants fan, Packers fan, Cowboys fan — or you follow another NFL team.

An antenna can still save you money.

Watch the NFL games available on your free local CBS, FOX, NBC and ABC stations, then use streaming or another service when you want a particular out-of-market game that isn't being broadcast locally.

Use the antenna for what's free. Pay for the additional programming you actually want.

Can I Receive Gainesville, Orlando AND Tampa Bay TV Stations at My Home?

Maybe — but your exact location matters.

Over-the-air television reception can be affected by:

• Distance from the television transmitters
• Hills and terrain
• Trees and buildings
• Antenna height
• Antenna type
• Direction of the transmitters
• Signal strength
• Quality of the installation

Two homes only a few miles apart can sometimes have very different reception results.

That's especially important around Ocala and Marion County, where your exact location may determine whether receiving stations from a second or even third television market is practical.
