How Can I Watch NFL Football FREE With an Antenna?

It's actually pretty simple.

NFL games shown on your local broadcast television stations are available free over the air.

Your antenna receives the television signal directly from the local broadcast tower. There is no cable company or streaming service required to receive an over-the-air station.

So, when an NFL game is being broadcast on a local station you can receive with your antenna, you can watch that game without a monthly antenna bill.

An antenna won't provide every NFL game. Some games are exclusive to streaming services or pay-TV channels.

That's why we often recommend:

Use an antenna for the local channels you can receive FREE. Keep streaming for the games and programming you can't receive over the air.

You don't have to choose one or the other.

What NFL Games Can I Watch With an Antenna?

That depends on which games your local television stations are broadcasting.

NFL games are regularly carried on broadcast networks including:

CBS — Many Sunday afternoon NFL games
FOX — Many Sunday afternoon NFL games
NBC — Sunday Night Football and other selected games
ABC — Selected NFL and Monday night games when scheduled for broadcast television

When those games are carried by your local over-the-air station, an antenna may allow you to watch them FREE.

Other games may require streaming or a pay-TV service.

Why Can't I Choose Any NFL Game I Want?

This is one of the most important things to understand about watching football with an antenna.

Your antenna doesn't choose the football game.

Your antenna receives the local television station.

The NFL's television agreements and the local broadcaster determine which game appears on that station in your television market.

For example, suppose two NFL games are being played Sunday afternoon on CBS.

If the Orlando CBS station is carrying one game, that's the CBS game you'll receive from that Orlando station.

Installing a larger antenna won't make that station show the other game.

The antenna receives the station. The broadcaster determines which football game is on it.

Why Are Orlando Stations Important in Leesburg, Mount Dora, Tavares, Eustis & Apopka?

These communities are primarily served by Orlando-area television stations.

That means the NFL games selected for broadcast on Orlando's local CBS, FOX, NBC and ABC affiliates are generally the games available to antenna viewers receiving those stations.

For Jacksonville Jaguars fans, that can be particularly useful because Jaguars games are frequently selected for broadcast in the Orlando market.

But Jaguars fans aren't the only people who can benefit from an antenna.

Depending on the week's NFL schedule, Orlando stations may carry games involving teams from throughout the league.

What About Tampa Bay Buccaneers Games?

Now we get to one of the interesting things about living in this part of Central Florida.

Depending on your exact location, some homes may also be able to receive television stations coming from the Tampa Bay television market.

Tampa Bay stations will often give local priority to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when the Bucs are scheduled for the applicable local network and time period.

That means an Orlando station and a Tampa station can sometimes be carrying different NFL games at the same time.

If your antenna system can receive stations from both markets, you may have another football choice.

Two TV Markets Can Mean More Football Choices

Imagine this situation:

The Orlando FOX or CBS station is carrying a Jacksonville Jaguars game.

At the same time, the corresponding Tampa Bay station is carrying a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game.

If both stations are available at your home, you could potentially have access to both broadcasts over the air.

Another Sunday, the two markets might carry the same game or entirely different matchups.

That's why we don't promise that receiving two markets will always give you two different NFL games.

But the basic principle is simple:

More receivable local stations can mean more viewing choices.

And that goes beyond football. A second television market can sometimes provide additional news, weather and other local programming as well.

Why Would I Need a TV Antenna Rotor?

There's a catch.

The Orlando and Tampa Bay television transmitters are in different directions.

A good long-range directional antenna is designed to receive signals primarily from the direction in which it is pointed.

That's where an antenna rotor can be useful.

A rotor allows you to turn the antenna.

Want the Orlando stations?

Point the antenna toward Orlando.

Want to see which Tampa Bay stations are available?

Turn it toward Tampa.

For the right home and reception conditions, a rotor can be an excellent way to take advantage of television signals arriving from different directions.

Would Two TV Antennas Be Better?

Sometimes.

Instead of rotating one antenna, a properly designed system may use a second antenna aimed toward another television market.

For example, one antenna may be optimized for Orlando while another is aimed toward Tampa Bay.

But installing two antennas isn't simply a matter of connecting two pieces of coax together.

The signals, frequencies, directions and individual installation need to be evaluated to determine whether a multiple-antenna system makes sense.

That's one reason professional system design can make a difference.

What If I'm Not a Jaguars or Buccaneers Fan?

That's fine!

Central Florida is full of NFL fans who originally came from somewhere else.

Maybe you're a:

• Steelers fan
• Bills fan
• Eagles fan
• Giants fan
• Packers fan
• Cowboys fan
• Dolphins fan
• Or a fan of another NFL team

An antenna can still be useful.

Watch the NFL games that are available on your free local stations, then use streaming or another service when you want a particular out-of-market game that isn't being broadcast locally.

Use the antenna for what's free. Pay for the additional programming you actually want.

Can I Receive Both Orlando and Tampa Bay TV Stations at My House?

Maybe — but your exact address matters.

Over-the-air television reception can be affected by:

• Distance from the television transmitters
• Hills and terrain
• Trees
• Buildings
• Antenna height
• Antenna type
• Direction of the transmitters
• Signal strength
• Quality of the installation

Two homes only a few miles apart can sometimes have very different reception results.

That's especially important in Leesburg, Mount Dora, Tavares, Eustis and Apopka, where the signals available from Orlando and Tampa Bay can vary considerably depending on location.

What About Miami Dolphins Fans?

And let's not forget Florida's original NFL team — the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins began playing in 1966, years before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and decades before the Jacksonville Jaguars. That means many longtime Florida residents grew up as Dolphins fans — and still are today.

The good news for Dolphins fans living in Leesburg, Mount Dora, Tavares, Eustis, and Apopka is that selected Miami Dolphins games are regularly broadcast in the Orlando television market.

Many Dolphins games are carried nationally or regionally on CBS or FOX, both of which are available free over the air when the game is being shown by your local station.

However, you may get the Dolphins one Sunday and the Jaguars the next.

That's because the NFL determines which regional games are available in each television market, and Jacksonville can receive priority in the Orlando market under certain circumstances.

So if you turn on your local CBS station expecting the Dolphins and find the Jaguars instead, there's nothing wrong with your antenna!

Your antenna is receiving the correct local station. The station is simply carrying the NFL game assigned to the Orlando market that week.

For longtime Dolphins fans, an over-the-air antenna can still provide opportunities to watch Miami football FREE, along with Jaguars, Buccaneers and other NFL games that are selected for local broadcast.

That's another reason having access to more than one television market can be valuable for a Central Florida football fan.
